Chapter 12: Cut Here
"Positive pressure," the neonatal nurse said, and fitted the little mask over the baby's face.
I stayed at the warmer with my fingertips on the baby's chest, and I counted.
Compress, compress, breathe.
Behind me, Sabine was sobbing, "Is she okay? Is she okay? Somebody tell me."
"We're working on her," Roderick said from the head of the bed, in the calmest voice I have ever heard.
"Look at me, Sabine. They've got her."
Bram said nothing at all.
I looked down at the baby, a dark-haired girl with her fists curled and her face squeezed shut.
She was a seven-pound baby with a perfect little nose.
She belonged to a man who had left me on a road to get to her mother.
It made no difference to my hands.
Rub, breathe, rub.
"Come on, sweetheart," I whispered. "Come on. Show me."
