He Left Me in the Snow for Her Labor, So I Delivered It novel · Chapter 23 of 24

Chapter 23: Snow Day

It snowed again on Sunday, a clean eight inches with no wind, and the whole city stayed home.

Roderick was in my kitchen at nine in the morning in a borrowed apron, burning pancakes.

"They're supposed to be brown," I said from the doorway.

"These are brown."

"They're black."

"They're deeply brown," Roderick said, and turned one over with the spatula to show me.

I took the spatula away from him.

We had slept in my bed, our first full night in a house with no pager, and I hadn't been called once.

I had woken at six with his arm across my waist and no idea what to do with so much quiet.

The doorbell rang at ten.

Sabine stood on the porch in her sister's coat with the baby strapped to her chest, and her sister behind her with a casserole dish.

"We were going to stay in," Sabine said. "And then I thought, no."

She hitched the baby higher.

"I'm going to get out of the house on the first day I can."

"Come in," I said.

"I brought a casserole. It's my sister's. I can't cook."

"She can't," her sister agreed, and edged past me into the hall.

The plow driver arrived at eleven, on foot, with her daughter's husband driving the truck slowly down the street behind her.

"My daughter wanted to come," she said, stamping her boots on the mat.

She jerked her thumb at the truck.
