Chapter 17: A Grieving Sister
Vaughn dressed in under a minute.
I pulled my sweater on and followed him down the stairs.
"We said we'd let her lie," I whispered.
"I know. I won't tell her about the log."
"Then what do we say?"
"As little as I can stand."
He opened the gate himself.
Kendra stood on the sidewalk with Ansley's old phone in both hands, the case cracked across one corner.
A woman walking a dog slowed down on the other side of the street.
A man in running clothes stopped to retie his shoe.
"Thank you for seeing me," Kendra said. She looked at me, then at his bare feet, and then she looked away.
"I know what this looks like. I came to confess."
"Confess what?" Vaughn said.
"Everything."
Her voice was thin and trembling.
She held the phone up between us, and the screen lit with a call list.
I did not need to read it.
"This is Ansley's last night," she said. "I should have shown you five years ago."
"Show me now."
She thumbed down to a line near the bottom.
*1:12 a.m. Kendra. 9 min.*
The dog walker had stopped completely.
"She called me," Kendra said. "At the end. And I took it."
"You told Geneva you were at the cabin," Vaughn said. "With no signal."
"I lied."
Tears ran down her face.
"I was in my apartment, in bed. I lied because I couldn't say it, to you or to Mother. I couldn't say I picked up and she told me goodbye, and I said nothing that helped."
"What did she say?"
"That she loved me. That she was tired. That she was sorry about the letter, and I should read it out if anything happened."
