Chapter 12: Three in the Morning
At three in the morning someone started screaming my name on Dolores's lawn.
I was awake already. I had not slept since the ballroom.
I pushed back the curtain and looked down.
Preston knelt in the wet grass under the maple tree in his tuxedo, with no jacket and no shoes. His white shirt was torn at one shoulder.
His hair stuck up on one side. His face was streaked with mud.
"Leah!" he shouted. "Leah, come out! Please! I made a mistake!"
Porch lights were going on up and down the street.
Dolores stood next to me in her robe, holding a rolling pin.
"Do you want me to call the police?"
"Not yet."
"Do you want to go down there?"
"No."
I watched him through the glass.
The man who had told me I was withered and spent was crawling toward my friend's front steps on his knees.
"I'll give you the house!" he yelled. "I'll give you the shares! I'll fire her, I fired her this afternoon, I swear it! Leah! You can't leave me, I don't know how to do this!"
A neighbor's window flew open.
"Some of us have to work in the morning!" a man shouted.
"I'm sorry!" Preston shouted back, to the whole block. "I'm so sorry! I only want my wife!"
He sounded like a man who had lost track of where he was.
His voice cracked and he began to laugh. It was a high, wrong laugh.
"I'd do it again," he said, and then he was sobbing. "I'd do it again. I don't know why I said it. I don't know why I said it."
My chest hurt. Not for him.
For the woman who had slept beside him for ten years and never once asked why he kept his study locked.
