Chapter 21: A Week
Nolan's POV
In the morning I made her coffee with two sugars and brought it to the mattress.
She sat up with the sheet around her and her hair wild, and she took the cup in both hands.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
I had decided in the night what I would say. I had practiced it at the window.
"Leah. What do you want from me?"
She looked at me over the rim.
"That's my question," she said.
"I know. I'm asking first."
"Why?"
"Because I've watched the people around you tell you what you are for ten years. Your husband. His secretary. My mother, in her way, with her cards."
My throat was dry.
"I won't be the next one. I won't tell you what you need. I'll ask, and I'll do it."
She was quiet.
Down on Damen a bus hissed to a stop.
"I want a week," she said.
My stomach dropped.
I had known it could come. I had not known how much it would hurt.
"A week of what?"
"Of nothing. Of waking up in my own room and being nobody's." Her hands tightened on the cup. "I went from my father's house to Preston's. From Preston's to Dolores's. From Dolores's to your bed. I have never in my life lived one week alone."
"Leah."
"It's not about you. You're the best thing that has happened to me. That's why I need it." Her voice shook. "I don't want to love you because the alternative is nobody. I want to choose."
I waited until my chest unlocked.
I thought of Union Station, and the four hours I stood at gate six believing that the woman I wanted had walked out on me.
