Chapter 24: White Roses
On the fourteenth of June I bought my own flowers.
I stood at the market stall on Clark Street at seven in the morning and pointed at the white roses.
"Two dozen," I said.
The vendor wrapped them in brown paper.
"Anniversary?" he asked.
"The first one I've picked myself."
I carried them home in both arms.
The house on the lake looked different in summer.
The heavy curtains were gone, and Dolores had stripped the dining room to its floorboards in one furious weekend.
All the windows stood open.
I put the roses in a glass pitcher on the long table, because there was not a vase in the house big enough.
Dolores came in through the kitchen door with a bag of bagels.
"The divorce was final eleven months ago," she said. "You're still celebrating?"
"I'm celebrating the day I left."
"That's a better holiday." She dropped the bagels on the counter. "I only came to say the lawyers signed the last of the papers. The company is yours and Nolan's, and the board chair says you can fire him whenever you like."
"I'll keep him."
"He's the only one who ever clapped."
I laughed.
The mail was on the hall table.
One white envelope sat on top, in careful capital letters.
I opened it at the table, standing up.
