Chapter 6: My Father's Toolbox
On Wednesday morning I went home with a sheriff's deputy.
Dolores had filed for a civil standby before breakfast.
It gave me one hour to remove my own things from the Lake Forest house.
An officer would watch the whole time.
"Take only what is yours," she told me in the car. "Do not touch his papers. Do not touch his computer. If you want to throw something, throw it where the deputy can see it's yours."
"That's the strangest legal advice I've ever heard."
"I've had thirty years to polish it."
The iron gate stood open when we arrived.
The deputy, a tired man with a mustache, walked ahead of us up the drive. A gardener on the next lawn stopped his mower.
I had my own key to the front door. The lock had been changed.
The deputy knocked.
Nobody answered for a long minute.
Then the door opened, and Mallory stood there with a coffee mug in her hand.
She was wearing my robe.
It was the gray silk one Preston had given me for our eighth anniversary. It had my initials stitched on the pocket.
"Oh," Mallory said. "Mrs. Corbin."
"Ms. Quince," said the deputy, looking at his clipboard. "Do you live at this address?"
"Preston asked me to stay," she said. "I'm only here to help."
"Help with what?" asked Dolores.
Mallory did not answer.
The deputy said, "The homeowner's wife is entitled to enter and remove her belongings. You can step aside, ma'am."
Mallory stepped aside.
I walked into my front hall.
