Chapter 16: Vaughn's POV

Vaughn's POV

I woke at four-ten because the bed was cold.

The envelope against my phone said: Back by seven. If I'm not, come.

I read it once.

Then I looked at the time on my phone, and at the live video someone had sent to my head of security at three-fifty.

My wife stood in a dusty attic with a cardboard box in her hands, and forty thousand strangers watched her.

I was dressed before the lift came.

I called as I drove.

"Where?" said my security chief.

"Fourteen Larkin Street."

"I'm already on my way," she said. "It's twenty minutes from here."

I made it in fifteen and ran two red lights.

Larkin Street was a row of narrow brick houses.

At half past four in the morning, the pavement in front of number fourteen was full of people in coats over pajamas.

They held their phones up to the dark house.

They had come out to watch.

Not one of them had knocked.

I stopped the car in the middle of the road.

"Move," I said. "Now."

A man with a camera on his shoulder stepped in front of me.

"Mr. Stroud, is it true your wife broke into the Danvers house?"

I looked at him until he stepped aside.

On the porch of number fourteen, a small white-haired woman in a quilted robe stood with her hands clasped.

She looked at me and already knew who I was.

"You're the husband," she said.

"Yes."

"She's in the attic. We could hear her pounding."

"And you didn't go in?"

"The girl said she'd call the police." She lifted her chin. "I've known that girl since she was six. I lived next door to her parents for twenty-two years."
