Chapter 21: The Papers

Hallie's POV

Benedict stood on the grass in front of me and did not sit down.

"You signed those the first night," he said.

"In my room, at the desk, with the lock turned."

"Why?"

"Because the terms said divorce on request. I wanted to be the kind of person who had her way out signed and ready."

"And you kept them."

"I kept them in my bag for two weeks," I said. "Do you know why?"

"No."

"I signed them hoping you would refuse to file."

He went very still.

"I thought, he'll read it and be offended," I said. "I thought he'd say, tear it up, Hallie. And you said nothing. You put them in a folder and went to the office."

"I thought you meant it."

"I know. That's the trouble with both of us."

He crouched in front of the bench until his eyes were level with mine.

"Hallie."

"Let me finish. I'm not good at this."

"You're very good."

"I'm not." I swallowed. "I've had two weeks of you being careful. You walk slowly when you're angry, and you never touch me until I move first. You left a cup of tea on a seat and stepped behind a pillar. Tonight you told your grandmother how I feel in the third person, with me sitting right there."

"That's true."

"So I'll tell you how I feel, and you can't argue."

His jaw worked.

"Go on," he said.

"I'm angry about the pillar. I'm going to be angry for a long time. And I am so far gone about you that I don't know where the angry stops."
