Chapter 9: The Friend Who Filmed

The friend in the green jacket stood in the sitting room with his hands clasped in front of him.

He looked like he hadn't slept.

Eleanor sat in the armchair with her cane across her knees.

Benedict stood behind my chair, and I felt him there without having to turn.

"I'm not here to get anything," the friend said. "I just can't have it be on me anymore."

"Have what on you?" I asked.

He held out a small black flash drive.

"Last Thanksgiving. Brooke told us it was just a prank. She said Cade would send you the wrong flight number so you'd be out of the way for the weekend."

"Out of the way," I said.

"He needed the whole weekend free. For her lake house."

He swallowed.

"The tall one filmed some of it. I copied it off his phone the day after the passport. I didn't know what else to do with it."

Benedict took the drive from his hand and plugged it into the laptop on the desk.

Nobody spoke while the file loaded.

I stood up and went to stand beside it.

The video was shaky, shot from the doorway of a kitchen.

It had a date in the corner.

Wednesday before Thanksgiving, 3:14 p.m.

That was the hour I was sitting in arrivals with my coat on my lap, watching a board that said a flight I'd been told about had landed.

In the video, a long table was set with plates and bottles.

Six people were laughing.

Cade sat at the head with his shirt open, and Brooke was in his lap with her arms around his neck.

She was wearing the yellow dress.

"Okay, okay," the tall friend's voice said behind the camera. "Quiet. Let's check on her."
