He Let Her Wear His Shirt, So I Froze the Club's Money novel · Chapter 9 of 24

Chapter 9: Unit Forty

The bikes closed on us for nine miles.

I drove with both hands on the wheel and the flatbed's needle shaking at ninety.

Tawny kept turning around in her seat.

"They're right there. They're right behind us."

"Face front."

The first bike pulled alongside my window, close enough that I could see the stitching on the rider's vest.

He hammered on the glass with his fist.

I did not look.

I watched the road, and I watched the sign.

TRAVEL PLAZA, ONE MILE. WEIGH STATION, ONE MILE.

I had driven this stretch a hundred times on tow runs.

The weigh station had a state trooper's cruiser in it every day from noon to three.

It was twelve-forty.

"Hold on," I said.

I cut across two lanes and down the exit ramp so hard that Tawny's duffel hit the dash.

The weigh station came up on the right, with a white cruiser parked in front of it and a trooper in a hat standing by the scale.

I pulled in beside him and put the flatbed in park.

The two Ravens went past on the road above us without slowing.

I watched their taillights shrink.

Then I put my forehead down against the wheel and breathed.

"You're shaking," Tawny said.

"I'm angry."

"You're shaking."

"I'm both."

The trooper walked over and tapped on my window, and I told him I'd missed my turn.

He looked at the dent in my hood.

He looked at Tawny, and at me, and he let us go.

I took the back roads the rest of the way home.

Boone's bike was already parked beside the house when we pulled in.

He came off the porch with my father's old shotgun in his hands, and I got out of the truck and said, "I told you not to follow me."

"I didn't follow you." His voice was hoarse. "Mags called me. She heard on the scanner that a flatbed with a Gallows Road tag was running from two bikes on the turnpike."
