Chapter 16: The Luna Account

By nine o'clock, forty Cedar Ridge wolves stood outside the Mesquite gate.

They had come in vans, and half of them held their phones up like cameras.

Peyton stood at the front in a black dress, with a folder pressed to her chest.

Ronan walked beside me down the drive, and two of his wolves walked behind us.

I had seen those faces across a dining table for three years.

Not one of them would meet my eyes.

"Nessa," Peyton said, and her voice shook. "I'm so sorry it has to be like this."

"Then don't do it."

"I have no choice. The pack deserves to know."

She opened the folder and read from a typed page, slowly, so the phones could catch it.

"Four hundred and twelve thousand dollars is missing from the Luna account. It was taken in small withdrawals over three years. Every one of them was signed by Nessa Quinlan."

A murmur went through the wolves.

"I never had a Luna account," I said.

"The signature cards are on file."

"Show me one."

"The elders will see them at the proper time."

She turned to the crowd with wet eyes.

"I didn't want to say the rest. But you should know what kind of woman this is."

My stomach dropped, because I knew what was coming.

"She was carrying the Alpha's pup," Peyton said. "The last of the Haught line. And she went to a clinic in Sacramento and ended it with her own hand."

The sound that came from the crowd was low and ugly.

A woman near the front, the one who had once sat beside me at the harvest dinner and told me I looked tired, said, "You killed his child."
