Chapter 8: Frozen
"Wait," I said.
The neighbor stopped in the doorway with her envelope.
"What time did it freeze? Exactly?"
"I don't know. Six? A little after. I tried to buy a water from the machine and it said declined."
"Did you call support?"
"From the waiting room. The girl was nice. She said she couldn't override it. She said it was how the app was built."
Gina and I looked at each other over the kitchen table.
"Get my phone out of the freezer," I said.
I typed EvenUp froze ER into the search bar, and then EvenUp froze hospital, and then EvenUp six o'clock emergency.
At one in the morning I found the thread.
It was two years old, on a subreddit for personal finance, and it had four hundred replies.
The title was: Has anyone else's EvenUp card frozen during an actual emergency??
Under the first post, somebody wrote: Same. Pharmacy.
Under that: Same. ER.
Under that, somebody had written: Labor and delivery. I'm not joking.
Then I opened my notes app and started a list.
At three in the morning I sent the same message to every woman who'd posted.
"My name is Nadine Prewitt. I'm Holden Keefe's wife, the one in the video. My card froze in labor at 6:01. I'm not a reporter. I just want to hear what happened to you, if you'll tell me."
By noon three of them had answered.
The first was a mother in Lakewood.
Her son had a seizure disorder.
At 6:10 on a Friday she was standing at a pharmacy counter with his prescription.
Her card declined over a nineteen-dollar balance her husband had logged for pizza.
The second was a woman in Colorado Springs who'd driven her father to the ER with chest pains.
Her card froze at six while she was trying to pay for parking.
