Chapter 13: Six Years of Silence

I read the slip three times, and the signature did not change.

"Neil," I said out loud.

"Yes."

"He sent the heart doctors away from my father."

"For his mother's check-up," Cillian said. "She was in a private room two floors down, and she had no complaint."

My ears rang.

"What else do you know?"

"Penelope."

"What else?"

"Your father found out something about Neil's books that week," Cillian said. "He told me the night before he died. He said he would pull his guarantee in the morning."

"The guarantee that built Garner Group."

"Yes."

"And then he died, and the guarantee stayed."

"Nobody ever called it in."

"Marjorie knew," I said. "She stood in that bathroom and told me I'd lost someone here."

"She did."

"She lay in a private bed with six doctors around her, drinking tea, while my father died down the hall."

"That's what the roster shows."

"And she smiled at me at the funeral."

Cillian said nothing, because there was nothing to add.

I laughed, and the sound scared me.

"I married him," I said. "I stood in a church that year, and I married the man who did this."

"I know."

"You know?"

"I stood at the back."

I stared at him.

"You were at my wedding."

"I came to be sure you were safe," he said. "Your father asked me to watch over you if he couldn't. I watched, and I said nothing."

The corridor light buzzed above us.

"Why?" I said.

"He made me swear. He was afraid you'd carry it, and he knew I had no proof."
