Chapter 6: Daddy Didn't Come

By noon the front steps of Leacrest General were full of cameras.

"They'll stay until somebody speaks," Cillian said. "Better it's you."

"What do I say?"

"What happened. Nothing more."

I was in a clean blouse his assistant had found, with my cut leg bandaged and my cheek still marked from Marjorie's ring.

I walked out in front of the microphones and held my phone up.

"My name is Penelope Garner," I said. "Yesterday my six-year-old daughter and I were hit by a truck on the way home from school."

"My husband, Neil Garner, was told within the hour."

"I called him thirty-one times. He let every call ring."

A reporter near the front looked down at her own phone.

"My daughter needed AB negative blood. Slenale Memorial had it. My husband had the blood bank send all of it to his secretary, who felt dizzy."

"He told the hospital to send the specialists to her too."

Someone said, "Is that documented?"

"The blood bank manager has the signed order, and the treating surgeon will confirm it. I'm not asking you to believe me. I'm asking you to ask them."

"Are you having an affair with Cillian Draper?" a man shouted.

"I haven't spoken to Mr. Draper in six years. Yesterday I called him because he was the only person I knew who could get blood to my daughter in under an hour."

"He did."

I lowered the phone.

My hand shook, and I held it behind my back.
