Chapter 13: Seven Pounds

Jesse's POV

I gave my father the truck keys in front of thirty-one men, and then I walked.

It was two miles of ranch road to the cattle guard on Abby's land.

I carried a duffel bag, a coil of rope and the hat I had worn since I was nineteen.

Nobody offered me a ride.

I understood that.

A man who has just been fired in the yard isn't a man you want to be seen driving.

Abby didn't ask a single question when I came up her drive at noon.

She pointed to the barn and said, "The loft. There's a cot. Terms are terms."

I slept on the cot with my boots on.

I woke in the dark to the sound of the barn stairs creaking.

She came up with a wool blanket over her arm and a flashlight she didn't turn on.

She sat down on a hay bale across from me, close enough that I could see her face by the moonlight through the loft door.

"You didn't tell me all of it," she said.

"I told you everything, Abby."

"You told me what Ward did. You haven't told me what you did."

I sat up.

The cot rang under me.

"You came home," she said. "The morning after. You walked into my room at Sheridan Memorial."

"I did."

"What do you remember?"

I almost lied.

Two years of habit made my mouth start to do it.

"I remember it was seven o'clock and you were awake," I said. "You were lying on your side facing the window, and the nurse had put a blanket on you with a stripe down it."
