Chapter 21: Where She Stood

Daisy came out of the recovery ward on Monday at midnight, walking.

She had a shaved patch on her belly and a long stitched line, and she did not care about either.

She walked straight across the treatment room to my feet and sat down on them.

"Hello, you," I said, and picked her up.

Reuben stood in the doorway with the discharge papers and watched a grey cat put her whole face into my neck.

I closed my eyes.

I had been tired in this room, and scared, and furious.

I had never been handed something here that I was allowed to keep.

"Pills twice a day," Reuben said, as if he had to say something. "Soft food for a week. No hair ties in the apartment."

"I don't have an apartment."

"No hair ties at mine, then."

I opened my eyes.

"Reuben."

"I can make the spare room a cat room. For now." He put the papers down on the counter. "I'm not asking you to stay. I'm saying the door's there."

I looked at him for a long moment, with the cat purring against my collarbone.

"You said that on purpose."

"I said it because I'm bad at saying things, and I'm trying to say it first."

"I know," I said softly. "Bea told me what your ex-wife told you."

"Bea?"

"Everyone is in the same group chat now. It's a lot." My mouth turned up. "I'll take the spare room until I find my own place. I'll tell you when I have one."

"All right."

"That's all you're going to say?"

"I think that's the right amount."
