Chapter 22: On the Bare Stone

The great hall of Wolfhold was packed to the doors with wolves.

They stood in their furs under the carved rafters, a thousand of them, and every nose in the room was turned toward the dais.

Min-jun walked in with the baby in the crook of his arm.

Seo-jun walked half a step behind him, still unsteady, in a loose robe that hid the bruise of the bite on his neck.

The scent of him hung sweet and heavy in the cold air.

The pack could smell it, and what the pack smelled was exactly what the veil told them: a southern omega, fresh from his lying-in bed.

A low whisper ran along the benches.

"That's him."

"The southern prince."

"Look at the size of him."

The eldest of the elders stepped forward, an old woman with a white braid down her back.

"Prince Min-jun. The pack was told there would be an heir."

"There is."

"We were told it was born of the south."

"Of both of us."

"Born in a barred wing, in secret, to a foreign omega who hid his belly under loose robes." Her voice rang. "We have had two hundred years of pure wolf blood on this throne."

"Her blood is mine."

"Is it?"

The hall went silent.

The old woman lifted her chin.

"A girl," she said. "A weak girl, born of a weak line, to a husband who could not even carry her where we could see. I say what the pack says. Take a northern omega beside him. Let him breed a wolf."
