Chapter 8: Two Letters
Min-jun's captain brought the rider in at dawn, bound at the wrists, with a leather pouch tied to his belt.
The man had been caught at the first river post, three hours out of Wolfhold, trying to sell a fresh horse and cross before the ice closed.
He sat on the floor of the guardroom with his hood down.
He was young and thin, and he would not speak.
"Search him," Min-jun said.
The captain held up a silver ring.
It was small and plain, with a wolf cut into the flat of the stone and plum blossoms around the edge.
Seo-jun stood in the doorway in his riding cloak.
He had insisted on coming, and Min-jun had not argued.
"That's the Haeneul seal," Seo-jun said slowly.
"Whose?"
"My brother's." He crossed the floor and took the ring in his palm. "Jae-won wears one like it. It's the sealbearer's mark. Every messenger he sends has one."
"Then he is Jae-won's messenger."
"Then he is *a* messenger of the south." Seo-jun's voice was careful. "That's different."
Min-jun said nothing.
The captain cut the pouch open and shook out two letters on the table.
One was folded and sealed with a plain blob of wax.
The other had already been opened, and the paper was thin and cheap.
Min-jun read the opened letter aloud, in a flat voice, to the room.
The prince has refused the gift carriage and means to ride with his family. The boy and the omega are still to be on the road at the new moon. Tell me if the price changes.
There was no name at the bottom.
There was only a small neat plum blossom drawn in the corner with a fine pen.
Nobody spoke.
"It's Ren's hand," the captain said at last. "I've seen his writing on the guest list."
