Chapter 17: Beside

He was already in the tub when I came in, with the water to his chest and his arms spread along the iron rim.

It was a Sunday night in May, and the window over the sink was open to the smell of lilac from the yard.

The tub stood on four iron claws, long and deep, with the enamel worn gray at the taps.

He had lit one candle on the toilet lid, and the steam moved in the light.

"You said you wanted to be late," he said.

"I was late."

"I have been in here a long time."

"Then you're clean," I said. "Move up."

He shifted forward, and the water slopped.

I took off my blouse, and my skirt, and my underwear, and let them fall on the tile.

He watched all of it with his mouth half open.

I stepped over the rim and the hot water closed around my ankles, my knees, my thighs.

I stood over him for a moment, dripping, with one foot on either side of his hips.

"Sit," he said, very low. "Come here."

"I'll sit when I'm ready."

"Drita," he said.

"Look at me first."

He looked.

His eyes moved from my face to my breasts to the wet curls between my legs, and I watched his throat move.

Then I lowered myself slowly onto his lap, facing him, with my knees on the enamel on either side.

The water rose around us.

He was hard under me, and I did not take him in.

I wound my arms around his neck and kissed him.

It was a long, slow kiss, with the heat rising off the water and the candle shaking on its saucer.

His hands came up my back and held me.

"I missed you," he said against my mouth.

"I was gone all afternoon."

"I missed you all afternoon."

I laughed into his lips and felt him smile.

I kissed his jaw, his throat, the notch of his collarbone, and tasted the soap on his skin.

His hands slid down to my hips and pulled me closer, until my breasts pressed his chest and my clit rested against the base of him.
