Chapter 12: Forty People
Nobody in the union hall breathed.
The steward put down his hard roll.
"We don't hire Venturis," he said.
"I'm not asking you," Dario said. "I'm asking her."
Every head turned to me.
I looked at his raw knuckles.
"What happened to your hand?"
"The man who threw the hat won't throw another one."
The fisherman muttered something approving.
I didn't feel approving.
I felt sick.
"I didn't ask you to do that," I said.
"I know."
"You keep doing that. Deciding things for me. Fixing them in the dark."
"I know, Nata."
"Then stop." I picked up the napkin with thirty-one names on it and folded it into my binder. "This crew doesn't hire men who lie to the people they work with. You lied to forty people on your floor for five years. About me."
His jaw tightened.
He looked at the napkin.
He looked at the kids in their hard hats, who were staring at him.
"Tomorrow," he said. "Nine o'clock. Development floor. Come and watch."
"Watch what?"
He was already walking out.
I went.
I told myself it was to see Chiara's face.
At five to nine, I walked out of the elevator onto the floor where I'd worked for five years.
My badge was gone, but the guard at the desk just waved me through and wouldn't meet my eyes.
The whole floor was there.
Not just development.
Finance, engineering, legal, the assistants, the two men from his door.
About forty people, crowded between the desks in a half circle.
My old desk was empty.
Someone had left a dead plant on it.
Chiara stood near the windows in a cream suit, with her arms folded.
Ennio stood by the copier, cleaning his glasses with his tie, which meant he was nervous.
