Chapter 21: The Permit
"Kill it how?" I asked.
The widow snipped another orchid.
"He didn't say. He only laughed and said she has very good handwriting."
On the drive home I called the steward from the car.
"Somebody's going to try to kill the permit before Monday's vote," I said. "I don't know how yet."
"Then we'll be there," he said. "All hundred and thirty-four of us."
On Friday afternoon, the port board posted its agenda.
Item four. Caroline Street Pier. Co-op application WITHDRAWN by applicant. Sole remaining bidder: Venturi Holdings.
Attached were two documents.
The first was a letter on our co-op's letterhead, withdrawing the application.
It was signed with the steward's name.
The second was a structural report on the ice house pilings, with a professional engineer's stamp in red at the bottom.
It said every piling under the ice house had failed.
The stamp belonged to the man from engineering.
I called him.
He picked up on the first ring, and he was so angry he could barely talk.
"I never wrote that. I've never seen that. My stamp's in my desk drawer at Holdings."
