Chapter 6: Bridge Money
I got into the Lincoln.
Ennio didn't start the engine.
He took a small notebook out of his cardigan and opened it on the steering wheel.
Dates. Amounts. A bank I didn't recognize in Delaware.
"Dario sold the boat in March," he said. "His mother's house in Ocean City last fall. His Holdings shares, quietly, a few at a time, so his father wouldn't see the filings."
"For the bond."
"Every dollar. Cash, by courier, no name. Your father initialed every deposit and never asked."
"Three million one hundred thousand," I said.
"Out of his own pocket. For his father's theft."
I stared out the windshield at the gold letters on our glass.
"So he's protecting the Family," I said. "If the table found the hole, Tullio loses his seat. Dario's filling it so his father keeps it."
Ennio looked at me over his reading glasses.
"Is that what you think?"
"What else is there?"
He closed the notebook.
"I promised him," he said. "But I didn't promise to like it."
That was all I got.
On Tuesday morning, I put on my best blazer and went to the port board.
The hearing room was on the fourth floor of the World Trade Center by the harbor, wood paneling and bad coffee.
Item six on the agenda was Caroline Street.
Venturi Holdings was the only bidder.
Half the dockworkers' union had come in their work jackets to watch their pier get sold.
Dario sat in the front row in a charcoal suit with no tie.
