Chapter 7: The Stairwell

"I told the truth," I said. "Try it sometime."

"You told my father no in front of the port board."

"I told him no in front of my mother's whole lobby last week. He survived."

"That was a ring." His voice cracked on the word. "This was money. You just cost him a pier in front of forty union men and the newspaper."

"Good."

"Renata."

"He threatened my father, Dario."

He went still.

Not surprised.

Still.

"You knew," I said.

He didn't answer.

"Twenty-six months of slips, and you knew. You knew who signed them and why." I shoved his chest with both hands. He didn't move an inch. "Ennio told me about the boat. Your mother's house. Three million dollars."

"Ennio talks too much."

"Why?"

"Because the hole's in my family's name."

"That's not why."

"Take the oath on Sunday."

"Stop saying that!"

My voice bounced up four floors of concrete.

Somewhere above us, a door opened and closed.

Neither of us looked.

"You buried my work for five years," I said. "You stood in that conference room and let her read my plan. You told Ennio I was worse than the intern. You knew I'd hear. You wanted me to hear."

"Yes."

"And now you want me to swear in at a bank your father's robbing, and stay away from you, and be grateful, and never ask why."
