Chapter 6: What He Was Told

Margo's mother said, "Upstairs, Margo."

"Mom."

"Now."

Margo gave me one look over her shoulder, picked up her purse and went up the stairs with her back straight.

Her mother swept the torn check into her palm, and her hand shook the whole time.

"I'm sorry, Kerry," she said. "I don't know who I raised."

I could not answer her, so I walked out.

Dawson followed me onto the porch and down the steps to my car.

He had his phone in his hand, and it was unlocked.

"Take it," he said.

"Why would I want your phone?"

"Because I never let you see it. Not once, in three years." His voice cracked. "I always said it was because I trusted you more than I needed to check, and it was the other way around."

I took it.

I sat in the driver's seat with the door open, and he stood in the street with his hands in his pockets, and I read.

On the first night of the plan, Margo had written: She asked about Charleston in front of me. This is a pattern, honey. It's insecurity, and it'll only get worse.

Dawson had answered: What do I do?
