Chapter 31: Four Years Old
Femke's POV
My son turned four on the second Saturday of June, in Greet's back yard, with sixty people and one cake.
Greet had strung paper lanterns between the clothesline and the tackle shop, and nobody had the heart to tell her it was ten in the morning.
The lake lay flat and blue behind the dock.
Forty bikes stood in a long row on the gravel, with a cardboard sign taped to the first one.
It said NO MOTORS IN THE GARDEN, in Greet's block capitals.
Truus sat in a lawn chair with her shoes off and a paper plate on each knee.
"I'm retired," she said, when I passed. "I'm retired, and I'm eating all of it."
"You're the club's secretary."
"I'm a secretary who has an apprentice now."
She pointed her fork across the lawn.
Sanne was setting out napkins at the long table, in a blue sundress, with her daughter at her hip.
Her hands had stopped being chapped.
She'd been on wages at the clubhouse kitchen since December, and she'd learned the ledgers in the evenings from Truus, and the club had started calling her by her name.
I did not like her yet.
I had decided I might someday.
She saw me looking, and she lifted her paper cup to me.
I nodded and went on.
"Mama!"
My son came pounding across the grass in a paper crown, with the little girl running behind him.
She had a rabbit in one fist, and she wore a gray cardigan that was far too hot for June.
He called her the rabbit girl, because she never put the rabbit down, and she had agreed.
"She says I can't have the pirate," he announced.
"It's your birthday, you can have all the pirates."
"I told her."
