Chapter 15: What I Asked For
Laurence put his fist through the study door at ten past noon.
It did not break.
It was solid oak.
All he got for it was split skin across four knuckles.
He stood and listened to the car on the gravel outside.
It started, and rolled, and the sound of it went away down the drive.
The door opened a minute later.
Carlton stood in the frame with his hands in his pockets and his tie loosened.
He looked tired and worried and perfectly sure of himself.
"He's safe," Carlton said. "The driver has him. I know you're angry."
"You locked me in a room," Laurence said.
"For ten minutes. You were shouting at a man with a record, in the road, in front of a boy who was frightened."
Carlton shook his head.
"I was thinking of both of you," Carlton said.
"You were thinking of yourself," Laurence said.
"That isn't fair, Laurence."
"You wrote him a check and gave him an order."
