Chapter 18: Order Me
Eli looked at him for a long time.
Laurence stood in the middle of the carpet with his hands at his sides, waiting.
It was a strange thing to see.
Eli had spent eleven years waiting for someone to speak.
He had never once seen it from the other side of the room.
"Sit," he said.
His voice shook on the word.
Laurence sat on the edge of the bed at once.
"Take your shoes off."
Laurence took them off, one and then the other, and set them side by side.
He didn't look up.
"Give me your hands."
He held them out, palms up.
The knuckles were split and swollen, and a line of dried blood ran across the back of the left.
Eli took them in his own, and turned them over, and made a small unhappy sound.
"You hit a door," Eli said.
"I did."
"That's stupid."
"It was an oak door," Laurence said.
"Hold still."
He fetched the first aid kit from the bathroom, and a wet cloth.
He cleaned each knuckle in turn while Laurence watched him do it.
Three turns of gauze on each hand.
