Chapter 19: Three Hundred a Month
The boathouse smelled of diesel, wet rope and old varnish.
It had one bed, one stove and a window over the water.
"It's perfect," Eli said.
"It's got a hole in the roof," Laurence said.
"It's perfect with a hole in the roof."
Abe's grandmother stood in the doorway with her arms folded.
She was about four feet ten, in rubber boots and a man's sweater, and she looked Laurence up and down.
"You're the rich one."
"I was," Laurence said.
"Good. Then you've never washed a dish."
She put a plastic bucket in his hands.
"Three hundred a month, on the first. The fuel dock needs someone at six, and Abe says you're free."
"I'm free," Laurence said.
"Can you lift forty pounds?"
"I think so."
"We'll find out," she said, and left.
Laurence stood holding the bucket with both bandaged hands.
"I think I've been hired," he said.
"You have a job," Eli said, delighted. "Your first job."
