Chapter 5: The Olive Branch

Vivienne was already at the café on Charles Street when I walked in, at the table by the window.

She stood up when she saw me.

She wore a cream sweater and her blonde hair in a low twist, and she looked tired.

"You came," she said. "Thank you. I wasn't sure you would."

"You asked nicely."

"Sit. I ordered for you. A flat white, right? Hugh told me once."

"Hugh remembers my coffee order?"

"Hugh remembers everything," she said, and laughed a little.

The flat white was on the table already, with a slice of lemon cake beside it.

I sat.

She sat across from me and folded her hands, then unfolded them.

On her left one, the diamond caught the window light and threw a small bright smear on the tablecloth.

"I have to say something," Vivienne said. "I've practiced it, so forgive me if it comes out stiff."

"Go ahead."

"I never meant to take anything from you."

She didn't look away while she said it.

"I met Clay at a charity dinner. I didn't know until later that he'd been engaged. When I found out, I told him he had to tell you himself. He said he had. I believed him."

"He didn't tell me," I said. "I read it in the engagement notice."

Her face crumpled for a second.

"That's what I was afraid of. I'm so sorry, Leona."

I had come ready to dislike her.

It was harder than I'd expected.

"You don't have to apologize for him," I said.

"Somebody should."

I broke off a corner of the cake and ate it.

It was good.

"I read the group chat," she said suddenly. "Last night. I hadn't looked in days. The things they said about you."
