Chapter 11: On Speaker
Marcello pressed the speaker button and set the phone on the kitchen table.
Lucia laid her teaspoon down without a sound.
"Marcello?" Chiara whispered. "I'm so sorry to wake you."
"You didn't."
"Where are you? I came down and the lamp was on, but the hall was empty."
"I'm in the kitchen."
"Oh. Should I come?"
"No."
A small pause.
"You sound strange," she said.
He looked at me.
I nodded once.
"Chiara," he said, "I need to ask you something about the email."
"Which email?"
"The one you gave me. Before the wedding."
I watched her breathing come through the speaker.
"Oh, darling," she said. "Is this about Naomi? She's put you through so much already. I told you she was clever."
"When did you first see it?"
"I told you. Eight years ago. I was working late at the firm, and it was sitting there on the server. I almost didn't open it, but something told me to."
"What day?"
"I don't remember, sweetheart, it was a long time ago."
"Where were you?"
"At my desk."
"Which desk? The second floor?"
"Marcello, why does it matter?"
"Because I want to say it the same way when I tell the court."
I watched his hand. He was holding the edge of the table, but his voice was calm.
I had seen that calm in a hundred depositions.
I had never been on the other side of it.
"What court?" Chiara asked.
"The one on Friday. Naomi is not going to sign anything until the hearing is over, and I have to answer for the email."
