Chapter 4: Pistachio

"Thank you for letting us stay here, Mr. Ferraro."

Miles said it a second time.

I looked down at him. His eyes were red, and he still held his chin up so he would not cry.

For eight years Marcello had never claimed us in public.

Today, for the first time, Miles had chosen a name for the distance between them.

Marcello looked like he could not stand to hear it.

"Miles."

He stepped closer, frowning.

"Why are you calling me that?"

Miles moved against my side and took my hand.

"Mom, let's go. We shouldn't bother them."

"Okay," I said.

We had planned to leave anyway.

I turned toward the door, but Marcello cut in front of us.

"Your bags are still upstairs."

"We don't need them."

"Miles's clothes and things are up there."

"I can buy whatever he needs."

Most of what was upstairs had piled up over eight years. Taking it would only mean packing that whole life into boxes.

Marcello looked at Miles.

"If you need anything while you're away, tell me."

Miles lowered his head and slid behind me.

I met Marcello's eyes.

"I can take care of my son. You have always worried that someone might misread our relationship. If you suddenly act like a worried father, Chiara may start asking questions."

Marcello could argue for hours in any courtroom in the country.
