Chapter 6: The Email

The judge adjourned the rest until Friday and told us both to bring everything we wanted her to read.

I walked out into the corridor first.

Marcello caught up with me at the stairs.

"Naomi."

"Not here."

"Then where?" His voice cracked. "You took my son out of the country."

"With your signature."

He stopped.

I watched him work it out. The folder. The pen. Chiara's call.

"You had me sign without reading."

"You did that yourself," I said. "I put the page in front of you and said sign here. You asked me nothing."

His jaw tightened.

I held out my hand.

"Show me the email."

"So you can delete it?"

"I'm a lawyer, Marcello. I know what a copy is."

He stared at me for a moment longer. Then he unlocked his phone and gave it to me.

It was a short message in a gray box.

From: N. Hargrove. To: a friend whose address I did not recognize.

I read it standing up.

I've decided. After the winter party I'll make sure it happens. A baby is the only way to get his name. He won't leave a pregnant girl. I know how to make that work.

Under it was a date and a time.

A Tuesday, ten days before Christmas.

Five days before the party where Marcello and I had spent a night we both lost count of.

My mouth was dry.

The sentences read like me. Short, clipped, a little too neat. Someone had read my briefs.

I read the date again.

Something about it nagged at me, and I could not say what.
