Chapter 17: The Slap

Delphine came to MacMaster Studio at noon on Friday, and she brought a cake.

I saw her through the glass panel in the street door.

She wore a cream coat and white gloves, and she held a pink box with both hands.

Two crew girls stood a step behind her, one with the gimbal and one with the second sign, which was folded under her arm.

The pale braid wasn't with them.

Declan was already on the stairs.

"Don't open it," he said.

"I'm not scared of her."

"I know. Open it anyway like you're careful."

I laughed, short, and went down.

Delphine's face lit up when she saw me.

"Emme! Oh, thank God. I called you a dozen times." She lifted the box. "I brought lemon. It's your favorite."

"It's yours," I said. "I hate lemon."

She laughed.

The girl with the gimbal raised it to her shoulder, and the red light came on.

"I want to say something," Delphine said, to me and to the lens. "And I want to say it face to face. Whatever happened between us, whatever is coming out of Rodney's mouth this week, I forgive you."

"Forgive me."

"For taking him from me. For making it so hard. For Tobin." She was already crying, in a clean line down each cheek. "He would want us to hug."

She stepped forward with her arms open.

I stepped back.

"No," I said. "Stay on the other side of the brick."

Her smile stayed where it was, and her eyes went flat.

She leaned in close to my ear as though for a hug and whispered.

"I have the phone, Emme. I watched it three times last night. You look so surprised."

I went cold from my neck down.
