Chapter 5: Dinner for the Board

Kevin told him Thursday afternoon, in the hallway, on the way out the door.

"Dinner Saturday. My father's house in Hancock Park."

"I'm not going."

"You're going."

"To dinner with your father."

"And the board."

Lucas stopped at the top of the stairs.

"The board."

"Eleven men. They've all been to the house before. They'll all be at the table."

"Why."

"Because they want to meet my husband."

Lucas stood there.

"They want to meet me."

"Yes."

"None of them have ever met me."

"None of them have ever wanted to."

Kevin went down the stairs and out to the car.

Saturday the housekeeper laid a suit on the bed.

Charcoal, soft wool, tailored to somebody's measurements.

Lucas tried it on in front of the mirror. It fit.

He hadn't worn a suit in two years. He'd worn one to his mother's funeral.

Kevin drove. The car was black and quiet and went up over the hills.

Hancock Park was old money. Wide streets, big trees, lawns with sprinklers going.

The house was brick with a white portico and a drive that curved.

Four cars were already parked along it.

A man in a white jacket took the keys and didn't look at Lucas.

Inside, the hallway was marble and the chandelier was real.

The housekeeper here had been working this house for thirty years and moved like it.

She took Lucas's jacket and said, "The other guests are in the library."

Kevin put a hand on the small of Lucas's back and steered him.
