Chapter 7: Inside the Study

Kevin let go of his wrist.

He walked down the hall and took a key ring out of his pocket.

There were four keys on it. He used the smallest one.

The lock turned with a click you could hear from the landing.

Lucas followed him in.

The study was smaller than the rest of the house.

One window, blinds down. A desk, a leather chair, two file cabinets.

The walls were lined with shelves and the shelves were lined with boxes.

Production files. Decades of them. Maverick Productions stamped on the spines.

Kevin shut the door behind them and turned on the desk lamp.

"Happy."

"I'm looking."

"Look."

Lucas walked the shelves.

1974. 1981. 1989. 1996. Two thousand through two thousand and ten.

He pulled one box out and opened it. Call sheets. Budgets. Nothing.

He put it back.

"These are old."

"Most of it's old."

"What's new."

Kevin sat down on the edge of the desk.

"There's nothing new."

"You said your father's files."

"He keeps the current stuff at the office. This is storage."

Lucas turned around.

Kevin was sitting with his hands on his knees, watching him.

The lamp lit half his face. The other half was dark.

"You brought me in here," Lucas said. "Why."

"Because you asked."

"You don't do things because people ask."

Kevin stood up.

"No," he said. "I don't."

He crossed the room in two steps.
