Chapter 8: The Copy

Lucas stood over the desk with the folder in his hand and listened.

Kevin was still out. His breath was slow and it hadn't changed.

Lucas turned the pages over in the lamplight.

There were four columns on every sheet.

Date. Vendor. Amount. And a fourth one headed with initials he didn't know.

He counted the pages. Thirty-one.

He couldn't take the folder. Kevin would know by morning.

He needed his phone.

His phone was in the kitchen sink, ruined, three weeks dead.

He stood in the study with his hands on the folder and thought.

Kevin's phone was in his jacket.

The jacket was on the back of the chair Kevin was sitting in.

Lucas looked at it for a long moment.

Then he leaned over and lifted the jacket off the chair, slow, one hand.

Kevin didn't move.

The phone was in the inside pocket. It had no lock on it.

Lucas carried it to the door and opened the door and went down the hall.

The bathroom was past both bedrooms. He shut the door and turned on the light.

He laid the folder on the sink and started photographing.

Page one. Page two. Page three.
