Byron drove us home in silence with both hands on the wheel.

When we pulled into the gravel yard, he didn't turn off the engine.

"Lacey."

"Yes."

"After today, I don't get to be the one who decides what you hear," he said. "I tried to hold it for you, and I was wrong about that too."

He reached into the glove box and took out the cream-colored envelope.

I took it from him.

My hands were steady.

I carried Poppy into the kitchen and laid her in her bassinet.

Byron came in behind me and stood by the sink.

I pulled out the letter and unfolded it on the table.

It was one page, on heavy paper.

I read it standing up.

Dear Mr. Angell. Our records show that a live birth was reported on the fourteenth of this month, resulting from a treatment cycle at this clinic. As the registered source of the donor sample coded H-0412, you are entitled to this notice under our donor policy.

I read it again.

The sample was banked in your name eight years ago, it said. It was released for use in the cycle of patient Lacey Mercer-Angell on the standing instruction of the authorized family representative, Mrs. Eleanor Angell, who has held that authority since the date of banking.

The patient's husband's own sample was not used.

I sat down.

I put the letter flat on the table and I put my palm on top of it.
