Chapter 12: Soil Dust
Johnny came back from the orangery alone and cheerful.
He washed his hands, kissed the top of Daniel's head, and asked what Daniel wanted for lunch.
He did not mention Rachel.
"Johnny," Daniel said. "About her. I need to..."
"After dinner," Johnny said. He did not turn around. "Tell me after dinner. It's a lot of people at once, and I want to hear it properly."
Daniel let him go.
It was the easy thing to do, and he knew that, and he did it anyway.
The welcome dinner was held in the long dining room, with every leaf in the table and all twelve chairs full.
His uncle sat at the head and made a toast to family.
Rachel sat across from Daniel in a plain grey dress, with her hands folded, and she looked at him over her wine glass, sorry-eyed.
Johnny sat on Daniel's left.
He ate everything on his plate, and he laughed when Daniel's father said something dry about the soup, and he kept one hand under the table, on Daniel's knee.
The hand did not move.
It stayed there through the second course, warm and steady, and Daniel held on to it.
"Johnny," Rachel said, over the fish. "These vegetables are wonderful. Are they yours?"
"Some. The carrots came from our farm."
"They're so fresh." She smiled. "You can tell. They taste of earth."
"That's the idea," Johnny said, grinning.
"I've always loved that about farmers. You bring the earth right in with you." She turned her glass slowly by the stem. "Daniel used to change his shirt twice a day, you know. I never saw him with a speck on him."
