Chapter 13: The Empty Side

Daniel was still holding the pill case when his mother came in without knocking.

She had her robe on over her good nightgown, and she stopped just inside the door.

She looked at the bed, the open closet and the paper in his other hand.

"Oh, Daniel," she said.

His father came in behind her, and then his grandmother on her cane.

They stood in a line along the foot of the bed, the whole Silver family, exactly as they had stood on the staircase on the wedding day.

"He's gone," Daniel said. "He left a note about the tomato."

His mother laughed.

It burst out of her, short and shocked, because the note said Water her at seven and the tomato had a name.

Then she looked at his face, and the laugh stopped.

"You were silent," she said. "I watched you. You looked at your plate and talked about fish."

"I know."

"That poor boy sat there with his hand on your knee."

"Mother, I know."

"Let me say what he did," his father said.

Everyone turned, because he almost never said anything.

He stood with his hands behind his back and looked at the ceiling.

"He carried you over the gravel when the chair stuck, and when the chair stuck again he carried you again."

"Dad."

"No servant of ours did that, and we paid five of them." His father looked down at him. "He got you outside. He got you to the doctor. I would like to know what you gave him back."
