Chapter 11: The Grave

Every guest in the ballroom waited for Knox to speak.

He took his hand off the door and walked up the aisle through the petals.

He did not look at Preston.

He stopped beside my chair, and his voice carried to the last row.

"My brother Theodore Hartigan died on Route 9 six months ago," he said. "The police report says Mrs. Aldous was driving the other car."

I had hoped he would say more.

"That's what the report says," Knox said. "I have nothing else to tell you."

He turned and walked out, the same way he had come.

The doors swung shut behind him.

I sat very still.

Preston lowered the microphone, and I saw him breathe again.

"Thank you," he said to the room, gently. "I'm sorry you all had to see this. Let's go on, shall we?"

He held out his hand to Skylar.

Skylar did not take it.

She stood at the foot of the platform with her bouquet in both hands.

"You told me the card was a loan against the company," she said.

"Skylar. Not now."

"It was her medical account."

"It's complicated, sweetheart."

"You said it was your own money." Her voice was low and steady. "You said you'd already told her about the divorce a dozen times, and that she kept forgetting."

"She does forget."

Skylar looked at me, and for the first time her face was not kind.

It was not cruel either.

It was confused.

She laid the bouquet on the nearest chair.

"I need a minute," she said.

"Skylar, there are a hundred and twenty people watching."

"Then they can watch me leave."
