Chapter 17: Judith's Offer
Judith called me at eight on Sunday morning.
"Lydia, dear," she said, in the voice she used for church. "Come to lunch. We should speak as family. Bring your Mr. Hartigan, since I understand he has something of mine."
"Something of Preston's," I said.
"Twelve-thirty."
She hung up before I could answer.
Knox drove me to the house where I had lived for six years.
He wore a recorder in his breast pocket with the light covered, and my phone sat in the bag on my lap, also recording.
A housekeeper let us in and led us to the dining room, where the table was laid for three.
Judith sat at the head in pearls and a pale blue cardigan.
On the sideboard behind her lay a thick blue ledger with a leather spine.
She saw me look at it, and she laid one hand flat on its cover.
"Please," she said. "Sit. Well, you are sitting."
She poured the tea herself.
"Preston told me what that boy's brother has done," she said, with her eyes on Knox. "He's played you a recording and talked you into a fantasy."
"Preston told you what's on it?" Knox asked.
"He told me enough."
"Then you know what's on it."
Judith's cup stopped halfway to her saucer.
"A great deal of rain and noise," she said. "A grieving man can hear anything in noise. My son was in the passenger seat of a wrecked car, Mr. Hartigan, with a broken rib. He was in no state to whisper to anyone."
"He had a broken rib?" I said. "Skylar says he had a cut on his hand."
"Skylar is a silly girl."
"She picked him up at eleven-forty on Marsh Road, two miles from the crash. Did you know that, Judith?"
