Chapter 21: The Gala
The Conwell Freight anniversary dinner was held in the ballroom of the Harbor Club, every year, on the last Thursday in October.
My father used to give the toast.
That night I stood outside the double doors on two aluminum canes, in the red dress, and listened to Preston give it instead.
"Thirty-one years ago," his voice said through the doors, "a young man with one truck and a lot of nerve started this company."
Applause.
"I never had the honor of calling him a friend, but I had the honor of marrying his daughter, and I have kept his company standing since the day she fell ill."
Knox stood at my shoulder.
"You can still roll in," he said. "Nobody would think less of you."
"I would."
He nodded and stepped back.
I had asked him to wait at the audio desk, and he was going to, but first he put his forehead briefly against mine.
"Go," he said.
I went.
The doors swung inward, and the room was huge and lit gold, with two hundred people at round tables.
At the far end Preston stood at a podium in a black tie with his glass raised.
The aisle between the tables was long.
I put the left cane forward, and then the right, and then my left foot, and then my right.
My hips ached from the first step.
A fork clinked on a plate somewhere, and the sound carried.
"To my late father-in-law," Preston said, "and to his daughter, my wife, who could not be with us tonight because her health has taken a difficult turn. Lydia, we love you."
