Chapter 14: Against Advice

Randall was out of the room before I had finished reading the message.

"Wait," I said.

He stopped in the doorway with one hand on the frame.

"Take me with you."

"Stephanie, you had surgery six hours ago."

"I know what I had."

A night nurse came in to check my drip, heard the argument, and looked at the two of us.

"I can get her a chair," she said. "Ten minutes, and she comes straight back."

Dennis wheeled me down the hall with a blanket over my knees.

My stomach burned along the stitches, and every seam in the floor went up my spine.

I did not say so.

The skybridge was bright and empty, with the city dark on both sides.

At the far end, by the glass doors into the children's hospital, a small crowd stood in a loose half circle.

The transplant doctor was there, still in her white coat, and a security guard with his hands folded in front of him.

Regina stood in the middle, with Jasper in a wheelchair and a backpack over her shoulder.

He wore a paper mask pulled up to his eyes and a knitted hat.

Randall had stopped about six feet from her.

"Regina," he said. "Take him back upstairs."

"No."

"He starts treatment tomorrow."

"He starts it where I say. I'm his mother. There's a clinic in Charlotte that will take him tonight."

"There isn't," the doctor said. "I called them an hour ago, and I called two more. Ms. Pritchard, if you walk out those doors, he is exposed to everything in this city with no immune system left to stop it."
