Chapter 11: The Rehearsal

Elise's POV

I woke up to the sound of Seth swearing, very quietly, at the window.

"What is it?"

"Nothing." He turned from the glass and came back to the bed. "Your husband was parked outside. He's gone now."

"He was watching us?"

"He was watching the window. I don't think he saw anything but a lamp."

I sat up and pulled the sheet to my chin.

The sun was up over the courthouse, and the whole street looked washed clean.

I should have felt exposed.

What I felt was tired of being watched by a man who had never once watched me when it mattered.

"Dot's going to say something," I said.

"Dot's going to say a great deal," said Seth. "Do you want me to go down first?"

"No. I'll go."

At half past seven I came down the back stairs with wet hair and a clean sweater.

Dot was at the counter with her glasses on a cord, pouring coffee.

She looked at me, looked at Seth's closed kitchen door, and looked back at me.

"I didn't say a word," said Dot.

"You didn't have to."

"The rule was his, you know. Not mine."

"I know."

"Eat something." She slid a plate toward me. "And you have a visitor."

I turned.

Sydney Lundy sat in the window booth.

She was in the same grey coat as before, and she had not slept either.

The yellow legal pad lay on the table in front of her next to a small black recorder.

"I know I said Monday," she said. "I couldn't leave. Stuart called me at five this morning from his car. He said you were sleeping here with the cook."

I sat down across from her.

"The owner," I said.

"The owner. Sorry." She rubbed her eyes. "I didn't tell him anything. I hung up. And then I decided I'd give you this whether you want it or not."
