Chapter 8: Three Questions

Stuart came back on Wednesday, at the exact moment the lunch rush hit.

He came alone, with no roses, and with his collar open.

He looked like a man who had slept in his car.

The room went still again, and the teenager with the phone was somehow already in the corner booth.

"Elise," said Stuart. "Please. Two minutes."

I was clearing a table by the window.

"You've had fourteen years of two minutes," I said.

"I know. I know I have." He pushed a hand through his hair. "My lawyer says I should sit down and settle. I don't want to settle. I want to understand what I did."

"You want to understand."

"Yes."

Dot put down the coffee pot.

She walked around the counter, wiping her hands on her apron.

"Sit," she told him.

He sat at the window table.

She stood over him with her pencil in her hand.

"I'm going to ask you three questions about your wife," Dot said. "Get them all right and I'll bring you pie. Miss one, and you leave her alone until she calls you."

"That's absurd."

"It's three questions, Mr. Author."

Stuart looked at me.

I stood with my dishrag, and I said nothing.

"Fine," he said. "Ask."

Dot cleared her throat.

"One. What did she teach?"

"High school math."

"Good. Which course did she love most?"
