Chapter 12: What He Signed

I read the form standing in the corridor, under a wall lamp, with Conall's breath on the back of my neck.

AUTHORIZATION FOR SUPERVISED HERBAL REGIMEN, it said at the top.

Below that was a paragraph about chronic pain after injury, a line for the patient's name, and a line for the Alpha's.

My name was typed in.

The date was the second of December, three years ago, the night after Moonfall.

"I was asleep for two days," I said. "I woke up on the fourth."

Conall took the paper from me, very gently, and read it.

I watched the color leave his face.

"I remember this," he said.

"Tell me."

"I was sitting by your bed. You hadn't opened your eyes."

His voice was rough.

"My mother came in with a folder. She said the pack's insurance needed a few signatures."

"She said I should do them now, so I could stay with you."

"And you signed."

"I signed everything. I didn't read a page. I held your hand with one hand and signed with the other."

He looked up at me, and he didn't hide from it.

"I signed a paper about my wife's body without reading one word," he said, "because it was easier than asking what it said."

Nobody spoke.

Bronwyn made a small sound, and I heard her walk away down the hall, giving us the room.

"You gave her permission," I said.

"I did."

"You gave your mother permission to do this to me."

"Not knowing." He closed his eyes. "That isn't an excuse. I know it isn't. I should have known."
