Chapter 18: Hymn
Friday morning I took the tape out of my bag and played the first four minutes of it for Soren in his kitchen.
I didn't make him listen to the rest.
He stood at the stove with his hands flat on the counter and heard Cormac Verlander say, I'm your father, in a voice scraped thin by thirty years of diesel.
When it ended he did not say anything for a while.
"You went alone," he said.
"Yes."
"You could have called me."
"I could have," I said. "I wanted to see what I'd do by myself."
"And?"
"I did fine."
He turned and looked at me.
There was something in his face that I had not seen before, and it took me a moment to name it.
It was pride.
He did not say so.
He crossed the kitchen and took my face in both hands.
He kissed me, long, and I tasted coffee and the end of a hard night.
"Shower," he said. "You're shaking."
"I'm not."
"Your hands are."
I looked down.
They were.
I let him lead me down the hall to the white tile bathroom with the glass stall.
I undressed in the lamp light.
He turned on the water and stood back, and I stepped under it and tipped my head into the heat.
The tape was in my bag.
The tape was safe.
The water ran down my neck and I felt the tightness in my shoulders go slack.
I heard him strip.
He came in behind me.
I turned in his arms, and he soaped his hands and began to wash me.
He started at my shoulders.
