Chapter 4: The Hallway
The lawyer recovered first.
He walked to the foot of the bed and opened his leather folder with both hands.
"Mr. Redmond, I represent a family who is deeply distressed by what happened to you."
Quinn looked at him without moving.
"They would like to offer two hundred thousand dollars toward your recovery. No admission of anything, simply a gesture of goodwill."
He laid a check on the tray table, and a stapled paper beside it, and clicked a pen.
"Mrs. Carraway shouldn't be here," he added. "She's been under a great deal of strain."
"Mrs. DeSaussure can stay," Quinn said.
The lawyer's smile twitched.
"I'd like to read that first."
"Of course. It's a standard release."
Quinn reached for the paper and held it out toward me instead.
"You read it. My eyes are bad today."
His eyes were fine. I took the paper.
I read the first page, and then the second, and my voice got quieter with each line.
"Do you want it all?"
"Just the part that matters."
I found the clause on the second page and read it out loud.
"The undersigned agrees not to name, identify or discuss the driver of the vehicle with any person, including law enforcement, except as compelled by subpoena."
Nobody spoke.
"That's boilerplate," the lawyer said.
"It says he can't tell the police who hit him."
"It says he can't discuss it outside the proper channels."
"Is the proper channel a check?" I asked.
A nurse at the desk had stopped writing. Two visitors in the corridor had stopped walking.
