Chapter 13: Four Years

Owen looked at Hank, and then at me, and I watched him pick a story.

"Hank's confused," he said to the room, and he put a smile on. "He's had a few drinks, and he's been in love with my wife for years. Everyone knows that."

A few people shifted in their chairs.

"Tell her what, Owen?" I said into the microphone.

"Nothing. There's nothing to tell."

"Then you won't mind if he does."

Hank had not moved from the foot of the stage.

"Not in here," he said to me, quietly. "Please. You should hear it without three hundred people."

I handed the microphone to the woman in pearls, who had risen from the head table and was holding out her hand for it.

Then I walked down the stage steps and out through the side door into the corridor.

I heard two sets of footsteps follow me.

The corridor was long and carpeted, with framed photographs of the harbor on the walls and a bench under the window.

I did not sit.

Owen came through the door first, fast, with his tie pulled crooked.

"Libby, whatever he says, he's lying. He wants you. He's wanted you for years."

"Be quiet," I said.

He stopped, which surprised us both.

Hank stood by the bench with his hands open at his sides.

"Four years ago," he said, "in the first month of your treatment, I drove Owen to a clinic on the other side of the state."

"Hank," Owen said.

"He didn't want anyone in Port Merrow to see his car in the lot. I sat in the waiting room while he gave a sample."
